A few thoughts on marriage
In response to Nic Conley’s tweet asking for advice from happily married people:

A few thoughts off the top of my head:
-
Don’t expect your marriage to last forever. Live through it as if every day might be the last day and you chose each other again.
-
Be extremely open. Try to resolve all your internal conflicts and dissatisfaction. Walking and hiking together, breakfasts and dates help a lot with that.
-
Marriage is not a competition. There is no status. No winners and losers. It should be 1 + 1 = 3 most of the time, not 2 and definitely not 1.
-
Many character traits are two sides of one coin. Accept her as-is, and don’t try to change her. Find ways to change yourself if necessary. But be clear about your values and where you can’t compromise at all.
-
There will be a lot of ups and downs. That is part of what makes a marriage feel alive. What is a heart without a pulse?
Enjoy the journey as a whole.
