The only real revolution

While reading The Lessons of History by Will and Ariel Durant, one insight from the book caught my attention:

The only real revolution is in the enlightenment of the mind and the improvement of character, the only real emancipation is individual, and the only real revolutionaries are philosophers and saints.

And they knew what they were talking about.

In other words, you can’t change the world by imposing your will on how it should be. And who are you to do that?

But you can:

  1. Educate yourself and work on becoming a better human being.
  2. Educate your children and show them how to behave by example.
  3. Support people who create and build a better future.

A better future cannot be imposed from the top down. It has to be built from the bottom up.
